Problems to solve

The Mediverse needed to create a professional community where trust was part of the product architecture, not simply a user policy.

Key challenges included:

Creating a structured verification process for members across different medical career stages.

Connecting members based on career stage, specialty, and mentorship requirements.

Supporting community activity through scalable backend operations and workflows.

Managing professional opportunities through flexible backend structures for evolving listing categories.

Protecting identity and verification data through controlled authentication and authorization.

Providing stable backend APIs to support mobile development and independent application releases.

Passport.js, OAuth, JWT, sessions, and role-based access secure platform interactions.

How We Made It Happen

The Mediverse backend needed to support verified identities, career-stage relationships, mentorship, community activity, and security. Patoliya structured the architecture around these workflows while maintaining stable APIs for independent mobile development.

01

Verification and Access Architecture

Patoliya structured verification as a core platform capability with explicit pending, verified, and rejected states. Access controls were aligned with career stages, roles, and permissions, creating a defined foundation for managing member participation and platform capabilities.

02

Relational Community Data

PostgreSQL and Prisma model relationships between members, profiles, specialties, career stages, and connections. This relational structure supports professional matching and mentorship workflows while keeping member relationships connected through meaningful professional attributes.

03

API and Application Services

Node.js, TypeScript, and Express form the backend application and API layer, supporting authentication, member data, mentorship, community features, opportunities, and core operations. This separation allows backend services to evolve independently from the mobile applications consuming them.

04

Authentication and Authorization

Passport.js supports Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram authentication alongside JWT and sessions. Role and permission controls provide a separate authorization layer, keeping identity verification and application access governed through defined security controls.

05

Media and File Infrastructure

AWS S3 provides dedicated storage for platform assets, while Multer manages file uploads and Sharp processes images. Separating media operations from the primary database keeps file handling within dedicated services while allowing APIs to manage associated records.

06

Event-Driven Community Operations

Apache Kafka provides an event-driven layer for processing community activity beyond the initial user action. This separates activity handling from downstream operations such as notifications and provides flexibility as engagement workflows and community activity expand.

07

Cross-Team API Coordination

Patoliya established stable, versioned API contracts for integration with the separately developed mobile application. This created clear boundaries between backend and mobile engineering, allowing the mobile team to consume predictable interfaces without depending on backend implementation details.

08

Engineering Quality and Maintenance

TypeScript, ESLint, Prettier, Husky, and lint-staged support consistent backend development practices, while tsx, ts-node, and Nodemon support local development. Together, these practices help keep the backend maintainable as platform capabilities continue to evolve.

Relational Data Foundation

PostgreSQL and Prisma provide the foundation for interconnected member, specialty, career-stage, and mentorship data. The relational model keeps professional relationships consistent as the community grows.

Event-Driven Processing

Apache Kafka separates community events from downstream processing such as notifications. This reduces dependency between individual operations and gives the backend room to support additional event-driven workflows.

Independent API Layer

The backend exposes versioned APIs as a stable integration layer for the mobile application. This architecture allows backend capabilities and mobile releases to evolve without requiring synchronized implementation changes.

Managed Cloud Architecture

AWS services distribute application, authentication, and media responsibilities across dedicated infrastructure. Lambda, S3, and supporting services reduce dependency on a single backend component and provide a flexible foundation for growth.
